Accessibility
In this instance, accessibility refers to the ease with which the majority of users, will be able to view, use and benefit from a website. 
Broadband
A generic term being used to refer to a range of high speed internet access technologies. 
Client log in area
A secure area of a website which requires a username and password before a user can enter, this is useful for sensitive or specific information. 
Connection speeds
The speed with which users connect to the internet. These vary enormously and although some users will have access to broadband and other high speed internet technologies a lot of users will still be using very slow modems. 
Content management systems
(CMS)A content management system is a piece of software that enables the content of a website to be more easily updated. They are used in situations where content will be updated on a regular basis. 
CSS
Cascading Style Sheets. These files contain information on all aspects of the styling including colours, fonts and layout.Style sheets allow us to make big differences to the appearance of an entire site by making small changes to the style sheets. 
Domain name registration
A domain name is the address of a website. "http://www.smallblue.net" is the domain name for this website. At some point in the past this domain name was registered by us. It means that from that point on people could find this website at this address. 
Electronic mail is just like old fashioned postal mail except that it is sent from computer to computer. 
Email configuration.
The setting up and configuration of Email services so that electronic mail (Email) works correctly. 
Hand code
To use a text editor to create well formed web pages as opposed to using an off the shelf application to create websites from templates. 
information architecture
(IA) Information Architecture is the structure of a collection of information. Within website design it is important that information is well structured so as to make the website more useable. 
Information system (IS)
An information system is a collection of interconnected pieces of information that can be stored, manipulated or communicated. 
Internet applications
An application which is used over the internet or intranet. 
Internet Service Provider
(ISP) An organisation which provides internet services such as web hosting, email and dial up networking. 
Login - Logging in
Logging in generally requires the entry of a username and password so as to gain access to some specific part of a website or resource. 
Mailing lists
A mailing list is a list of email addresses that can all be contacted simultaneously simply be emailing the list. This is useful, for instance, to keep a group of clients or members of an organisation up to date with news or promotions. 
On-line brochure
A first point of contact on the world wide web. An online brochure can be very simple and can be almost identical to a real world brochure putting across only the most pertinent and necessary information in a clear and concise way. 
On-line forms
An on-line form is just like a real world form in that is a facility with which information can be gathered in a logical manor. The advantage of an on-line forms is that the data is instantly in an electronic form. 
On-line shop
An on-line shop is just like a real world shop in that it is a place where people can go to buy things. In this instance though the shop front is a website and people buy things electronically possibly using their credit or debit card. 
Operating system (OS)
An operating system is the piece of software that runs on a computer and allows applications and programs to run. Examples of operating systems include, Windows, Linux, Mac and UNIX. 
Programmers
A programmer is someone who creates applications that run on computers. 
SBIS
Small Blue Information Systems. The name of this company, which is named after a rare local butterfly, called the 'small blue'. 
Search engine
A search engine is a piece of software which serves as a utility where users of the world wide web can search for things given a set of criteria which they provide. 
Search engine optimisation
(SEO)Search engine optimisation refers to the science behind making websites that search engines prefer to and find easier to index. The reason why this is done is so as to increase the ranking that the search engine will give to a website. 
Search engine submission
The process of informing search engines that we wish a particular website to be indexed. This has to be done correctly or otherwise the site could be incorrectly listed or black listed. 
W3C
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is an international consortium of member organizations, full time employees and the public who come together to develop web standards. 
Web browser
A web browser is a piece of software that allows the user to view web pages. 
Web Design - Web site design
Web design is the design or designing of a web page, website or web application. 
Web Hosting
A website has to be hosted, hosting a website involves keeping the files and resources of a website on a special type of a computer called a server. 
Web hosting configuration
Configuring how a website behaves using the domain control panel of an Internet Service Provider (ISP). 
Website
A collection of interconnected documents (web pages) containing and presenting information relating to an organization, group, or individual. 
Website promotion
The promotion of a website so that people know that it exists, if people don't know that a sight is there then no one will see it. This can be achieved using search engines, other websites, advertising, headings on stationary etc. 
XHTML
EXtensible Hypertext Mark-up Language is a computer programming language for web pages from the W3C. XHTML allows us to create strict document structures that enhance data by organising it in to lists, tables, headings, paragraphs etc.
